Labor Day, which is traditionally observed on the first Monday in September, pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers.
The first Labor Day parade in U.S. history was held on On September 5, 1882. 10,000 workers took unpaid time off to march from City Hall to Union Square in New York City. The labor movement created the holiday in the late 19th century and it became a federal holiday in 1894.
For many Americans, Labor Day weekend signals the end of summer and the beginning of the back-to-school season.
